Good morning all,

 

It was about a week before the weather became sunny.

it is warmer than yesterday with the temparatue of 15 degrees

and it is so nice weather this morning here in Tokyo,

Here is today's english!

" How much does it cost to have a flat tire repaired?"

"As far as I can remember, it costs at least 10 pounds.

You might want to fix it yourself."

 

"펑크난 타이어 수리하는데 얼마나 들지?"

"내 기억으로는 적어도 10파운드는 들거야.

직접 수리하는게 좋을지도."

( 타이어 수리 직접하세요?)

 

Words,Phrases & Patterns

> have  ; (사역동사) 여기서는 ( 업자 시켜서) 타이어를 수리하다.

> flat tire ; 펑크난 타이어. ( punk )라고 안함
> repair = fix ; 고치다, 수리하다

> as far as ; ....하는 한은

 

여기서 at least 는 적어도 , 란 뜻의 부사입니다. 

반대로, at most 는 많아야, 많아봤자, 란 뜻의 부사입니다.

 

우리말로 " 적어도 ", " 많아야 "라고 말하고 싶을때는, 

at least, at most를 쓰세요. 

 

예를들어;

a. a monthly income of at least $1,000  (적어도 $1000 의 월수입)

b. It will take at least 1 year (적어도 1년은 걸릴것이다)

c. There were 50 people there, at most.(기기에 사람이 많아야 50명 있었다)

Good morning all,

 

This morning is so cloudy and chilly with a temparature

of 10 degree here in Tokyo, so you'd better wear warm.

Here is today's english!

Besides the mortgage loan and the charges of water,

gas,electricity, and so on, we are supposed to pay

income and consumption tax.

 

주택대출과 수도,가스,전기요금 등등 외에도,

우리는 소득세와 소비세도 내야한다.

( 정말 그렇죠!)

 

Words,Phrases & Patterns

> mortgage... ; (담보)대출, 주택대출
> charge ; (명사) 요금

> be supposed to 동사 ; (규칙,법율,관습으로) ..해야하다.

 

여기서 Besides the mortgage 의 besides 는 ..외에도, 란 뜻의

전치사 입니다. besides는 부사로도 많이 쓰이는데,

이때는 "게다가" 의 뜻입니다.

 

참고로, beside 는 ....옆에 란 뜻의 전치사이니 구별하세요.

 

우리말로 " ....외에도 ", " 게다가", "...옆에 "라고 말하고 싶을때는

다음을 구별해서 쓰세요.

 

besides (전치사) ; besides + 명사 ; ....외에도

besides (부사) ; besides ( 단독으로 ) ; 게다가

beside (전치사) ; beside + 명사 ; ....옆에 

 

예를들어;

a. Besides a mother he has a sister to support

( 어머니외에도 그는 여동생도 부양한다 )

b. It is too late ; besides, I am tired

( 너무 늦었고, 게다가 나 너무 피곤해 ) 

c. I don't really want to go, besides, it is too late now

( 정말 가고싶지않고, 게다가, 지금은 너무 늦었어 )

d. He sat beside me all day (그는 하루종일 내 옆에 앉아있었다)

Good morning all,

 

It is very cloudy and cold windy morning and is about 13-15 degree

here in Tokyo, so you'd better wear warm.

I'm new to Tokyo. Yesterday, when I was going to

Shinjuku, I changed trains at Tokyo Station and,

by mistake, got on one bound for Chiba.

 

나는 토쿄에 초심자이다. 어제, 신주쿠에 갈때,

토쿄역에서 기차를 갈아탔는데, 실수로, 치바

행 기차를 탔다.

( 저도 비슷한 경험 한 적 있어요!)

 

Words,Phrases & Patterns

> be new to... ; ..에 초심자다....에 아직 경험이 적어 잘 모르다.
> change trains ; 기차를 갈아타다. 

> one ; 앞의 단수명사 대신 쓰이는 대명사. 여기서는 a train

> be bound for ; ...를 향해가다. ....행이다.

 

여기서 got on one 의 get on 는 (기차에) 에 타다 란뜻입니다.

기차, 버스, 비행기, 배등 (큰것)에 탈때는 get on...

반면 승용차, 택시등(작은것)에 탈때는 get into....

를 씁니다. 큰것에 올라타다 ( on... ), 작은것 안으로

들어가다 ( into...) 라고 외우면 쉽죠.

참고로, 큰것에서 내릴대는 get off...., 작은것에서 내릴때는

get out of.... ( 작은것 안에서 나온다는 의미 ).

 

우리말로 (기차,버스,택시, 비행기에) 에 타다, 내리다 라고

말할때, 구별해서 써 보세요.

 

(버스,기차,비행기,배) ; get on/off

(승용차, 택시) ; get into/out of

 

예를들어;

a. I am getting off at the next station (기차 - 다음역에서 내리다)

b. The presidential candidate got off the bus 

( 대통령 후보가 버스에서 내렸다 )

It is really getting cold here in Japan. Be careful not to catch a cold!

Here is today's english!

The visitors were due to arrive at the airport in less than

two hours, but their plane was delayed due to a suspected

bomb in the baggage compartment.

 

방문객들은 2시간이내에 공항에 도착예정이었으나,

그들의 비행기는 화물실내의 의심스러운 폭탄 때문에

늦어졌다.

( 이런 경험은 안 해야죠!)

 

Words,Phrases & Patterns

> less than ;..미만, in less than ( = within )... 이내에
> suspect ; (..가 아닐가)라고 의심하다. suspected 의심스러운 

> baggage ; (미국영어) 여행짐, 수화; (영국영어) luggage

> compartment ; (비행기, 기차의 ) 객실, 실

 

여기서 were due to arrive 의 due 는 ... 예정인 이란뜻의

형용사 입니다.

반면 주의할점은 delayed due to a suspected bomb

의 due to + 명사 는 ...때문에(원인,이유) 뜻의 숙어입니다.

 

우리말로 ...예정인 due...와 ...때문에 due to에 대해서 좀

자세히 설명하겠습니다.

1. be due + 시간, 날짜 ;

(행사 개최, 돈지불, 기차/비행기/관광객의 도착) 예정인

a. due date ; 만기일, 지불일

b. When is the baby due? ( 아일 출산일인 언제? )

c. The bill is due on the 25th ( 청구서는 25일이 지불일 )

d. The last train was due in 20 minutes ( 막차가 20분후에 도착예정이다)

e. The next train is due in 5 minutes ( 다음 기차는 5분후에 도착예장이다)

f. The train is due at 7:30 pm. ( 기차는 오후 7시30분 도착 예정이다 )

g. My essay is due next Friday ( 내 수필은 다음주 금요일 예정이다 )

h. The band's first album is due for release later this month.

( 그 벤드 앨범은 이번달말에 출반 예정이다 )

 

2. be due to + 동사 ; ...할 예정이다

 

a. The visitors are due to arrrive at the airport in 10 minutes.

b. He is due to come here tonight

 

3. due to + 명사 ; ...때문에(원인, 이유) ( = because of )

 

a. The accident was due to his careless

b. The team's success was largely due to his efforts

c. Most of the problems were due to human error.

" 그 겸손한 성직자는 몇개의 개발도상국에서 가난한

사람들, 병든 사람들, 신체 장애자들을 돌보는데 남은

Words,Phrases & Patterns

> priest ; 성직자
> care for; 돌봐주다

> developing ; 개발도상의, developing country 개발도상국. 

 

여기서 a number of 는 (수의량이 ) 몇개의 란 뜻입니다.

(숮자가 많고 적음을 나타낼때는 )

a small number of...( 소수의...., 적은수의... )

a large number of....( 다수의...., 많은수의 ...)

주의할점은 The number of...는 이런 수의 대소와는 상관없이

" ...번호, ..건수 "의 뜻이니 잘 구별해서 쓰세요.

 

우리말로, 몇개의, 적은수의..., 많은수의.... 라고 말하고 싶을때는

a number of, a small number of..., a large number of..를 쓰시고,

방/카드 번호, 사고건수 등을 말할때는 The number of....를 쓰세요.

 

예를들어,

a. There are a large number of books in his study.( 그의 서재에는 책이 많다 )

b. A number of problems have arisen. ( 몇개의 문제가 발생했다 )

c. The number of his room is 1008.( 그의 방 번호는 1008 )

d. The number of crimes in the urban districts...( 도심지역에서의 범죄건수...)

( 자기의 결혼 이상형! 찾기 쉽지않죠! )

여기서 Mr.Right 은  (결혼상대로서의) 이상형의 남자 란 뜻입니다. 

참고로 이상형의 여자 는 Miss.Right, Ms.Right 이나 one's dream girl

이라고 합니다.

 

우리말로, .....나의 결혼이상형의 남자, 여자 라고 말하고 싶을때는

Mr.Right, Miss.Right/my dream girl를 써 보세요.

 

예를들어,

a. You are my dream girl from above. ( 당신은 하늘에서 온 나의 이상형야! )

b. Where can I find my Mr.Right! ( 어디에서 내 이상형을 찾을 수 있을까? )

" 휴대폰 좀 빌려써도 되요?"
" 물론이죠. 어디보자... 아, 저기있네. 오른쪽 구석, 테레비 옆에."

( 다른 사람 휴대폰 빌려써야 할때가 있죠! )

 

Words,Phrases & Patterns

> by all means ; 물론이죠, = of course. = certainly

> right-hand ; 오른쪽의, left-hand 왼쪽의

> next to ; ..옆에

 

여기서 use..... 는  빌려쓰다  의 뜻입니다. 

전화기를 빌려쓸때는 borrow(빌리다)를 안쓰고,

use(빌려쓰다) 를 써서 Can I use your phone? 이라고 씁니다.

돈을 빌릴때는 borrow를 씁니다.

 

우리말로, ....전화기 나 휴대폰 를 빌려쓸때는 use를 쓰시고,

돈을 빌릴때는 borrow를 써 보세요.

 

예를들어,

a. Can I use your mobile phone? ( 휴대폰 좀 빌려써도 되요? )

b. Will it be all right if I use your mobile phone? ( 휴대폰 좀 빌려주시겠어요? )

c. Can I borrow some money from you? ( 돈 좀 빌려도 되요? )

d. She borrowed $200 from her parents ( 그녀는 부모한테서 $200 빌렸다 )
