It is fine day today and the morning lows of 2.7 degrees and during the daytime,
it will be about 7 degrees. I feel it is colder than yesterday because of the chilly wind.
Here is Today's English
Seq 59 ( unit 4 ) : lesson 8 (수량형용사 many, much 그리고 a lot of....)

3. I have a lot of friends.
4. I do not have many friends.
5. How many friends do you have?
6. There are many flowers in the garden.

7. I have much money today.
8. I have a lot of money today.
9. I do not have much money today.
11. How much money do you have?
12. You spent too much money yesterday.
Words,Phrases & Patterns
> garden ; (명)[C] 정원.
> fluently ; (형) 유창하게, fluent 유창한. ( 밑의 예문에서 쓰였음 )
> spent ; (동사) spend의 과거형. spend time[money] 돈[시간]을 쓰다.
오늘부터 몇일간 수량형용사에 대해서 공부합니다.
그 중에서 오늘은 [많은....]의 뜻인 many, much 와 a lot of.. 에 대해서 공부합니다.
many - 수의형용사로 가산명사 복수에만 쓰임.
much - 량의형용사로 불가산명사에만 쓰임.
a lot of - 수,량 양쪽에 다 쓸 수 있음.
1. 먼저, 수량형용사란?
사람이나물건의 수량를 셀때, 하나의, 둘의, 셋의 의 �자로 세는게 아니라,
많은(수)(량)의, 적은(수)(량)의, 몇개의...라고 대충의 수량의 정도를 나타내는
형용사를 말합니다.
2. 수량형용사 공부에서 중요한것은
- 수(數)의형용사는 가산명사 복수형에 쓰이고 복수취급하고,
- 량(量)의형용사는 불가산명사에만 쓰이고, 량이 아무리 많아도 단수취급 한다는것.
3. many 와 much 대신에 a lot of...를 쓸 수 있는데 그 차이는?
- 긍정 평서문에서 목적어(명사)를 수식할때는 a lot of..씁니다 (위 예문 3,8번)
- 긍정 평서문이라도 주어(명사)를 수식할대는 many,much를 씁니다 (위 예문 1번)
- 부정문, 의문문에서는 주로 many, much를 씁니다 (위 예문 4,5 하고 8,9)
4. many, much 와 a lot of...차이를 위 예문을 통해서 설명하면, 위 예문에서
- 2번 I have many friends 는 3번 I have a lot of friends로 표현하는게 더 좋고,
- 7번 I have much money today 도 8번 I have a lot of money today 로 표현하는게 더 좋은데,
이유는 긍정 평서문이고 동사의 목적어(friends)를 수식할때는 many, much보다 a lot of를 쓰기
때문입니다.
참고로,
4번, 9번은 부정문이니까 many, much
5번, 10번은 의문문이니까 many, much
5. many, much 와 a lot of 차이의 추가 설명
- 위 예문 6번처럼 there are...구문에서는 many, much를 쓰고,
- 12번 처럼 so many, too many, so much, too much 처럼 so, too와 함께 쓰일때도 many, much를 쓴고.
6. many,much 와 a lot of의 차이 너무 신경쓰지 마시고 many, much 편히 쓰세요.
- many,much 와 a lot of의 차이를 한마디로 말하면,
긍정 평서문에서 목적어(명사)를 수식할때만 a lot of...를 쓰고(위 예문 3번, 8번), 그 외에는
many, much를 쓰는것입니다만,
- 회화, 작문하실때 이 차이에 너무 신경쓰지 마시고 many, much를 주로 사용하시고,
혹시 어떤 문장에서 a lot of를 보시면 그 때마다 many, much와의 차이를 기억해 보시면 됩니다.
우리말로;
"교실에 많은 아이들이 있어요"를 영어로 말면? ( "아이"child의 복수 children는 가산명사이니까,
수량형용사 many를 써어 수식하고, many children는 복수취급이니까 there is...가 아니라, there are.....로 하면 되죠!) "어제 얼마나 많은돈을 썼니?"를 영어로 하면? ( 불가산명사 money를 much로 수식하고, 의문문으로).
예를들어;
(a) There are many children in the class.
(b) How much money did you spent yesterday?
(c) Many students in my class can speak english fluently.
