Good morning all,

 

TGIF ( Thanks God It's Friday ) !!

 

It is good weather with a blue sky this morning and

it is relatively warm with the morning lows of 10 degrees

and daytime highs will be about 15 degrees.

All living creatures depend for their existence on the

chemical elements of oxygen and hydrogen. in a word,

they can't exist without water.

( 물없이는 살수 없음 - 물의 소중함! )

 

모든 생명체는 산소와 수소라고하는 화학원소에 그 생명을

의존하고 있습니다. 말하자면, 생물은 물없이는 생존할 수

없다는것입니다.

 

Words,Phrases & Patterns

> living ; (명사앞에 써서) 살아있는,

> creature ; 생물
> depend ( for A ) on B ;( A를) B에 의존하다

> oxygen ; 산소

> hydrogen ; 수소

> in a word ; = in short, 말하자면, 한마디로 말해서

> exist ; 생존하다
 

여기서 of 는 전치사로 명사와 명사사이에서 즉 ...인

이란 뜻의 동격을 나타냅니다. 이때의 of는 (...의) 의 뜻이

아닙니다. 동격의 of 는 명사과 명사 사이에서 ( = ) 의

관계를 만들어주어, 즉....인. 즉....라고 하는 뜻으로 해석

하면 좋습니다.

 

참고로 of 뒤에 동명사가 오는 경우도 있습니다.

 

명사 of 명사 ; 동격의 of ( = , 즉 ....라고 하는 )

명사 of 동명사 ; 동격의 of ( = , 즉....하는 )

 

우리말로;

도시이름이...., 나이가 .... 이라고 표현하고 싶을때는,

동격의 of  를 써 보세요.

 

예를들어; 

(a) the city of Los Angeles

(b) at the age of 17

(c) the habit of speaking English

(d) his dream of winning a gold medal

그 논문은 문명의 영화와 성취의 모든면을 다루고 있고,

좀 덜 두드러진 요소, 즉, 대중의 심리는 다루지않고 있다.

> omit ; (일부러) 생략하다, 빠뜨리다

여기서 i.e. 는 즉, 말하자면 란뜻으로 명사와 명사 사이에서 즉,

말하자면 이라는 동격을 나타내고, 라틴어로  " id est " 입니다.

that is, that is to say 와 같은 뜻이고, i.e. 는 학술적, 전문적인

문장에서 쓰이고, 일반적으로는 " that is " 를 씁니다. 

 

i.e. ; 학술적, 전문적인 문장에서 씀

that is ; 일반적으로 씀

 

우리말로;

즉, 말하자면 이라고 표현하고 싶을때는,

i.e. = that is ( to say ) 를 써 보세요.

 

예를들어; 

(a) inflation, that is, a general rise in the prices of goods and services.

(b) He will leave Korea in five days, that is (to say), next Saturday.

(c) The basic essentials of life, i.e. housing, food and water.

(d) He is a local government administrator, that is, a civil servant.

Good morning all,

 

It is dark cloudy this morning but it will be clear up

from this afternoon and it is much warmer than yesterday

with the morning temperature of 11 degrees.

Here is today's english!

She looked as if she were about to burst into tears,

when all at once she burst out laughing as though

she had gone mad.

( 막 눈물이 쏫아질듯 하더니! )

 

그녀는 마치 당장이라도 눈물을 터뜨릴듯 하더니,

그때 갑자기 마치 미쳤기라도 했듯이 웃음을 터뜨렸다.

 

Words,Phrases & Patterns

> be about to 동사 ;  막 ...하려던 참이다

> burst into tears ; (갑자기) 눈물을 터뜨리다
> all at once ; 갑자기

> go mad ; 미치다
 

여기서 as if 는 마치 ...한듯이, 마치 ....인듯이 란뜻의 부사절을

만드는 접속사 입니다. as if 와 as though는 같은 뜻으로 바꿔써도

괜찮습니다.

참고로, as if, as though 절은 보통 가정법을 씁니다.즉,

가정법 현재는 과거동사, 가정법 과거는 과거완료의 형태로

동사가 쓰입니다.

본문에서 as if she were.....는 과거가 아니라, 현재의 가정법으로

그녀가 (지금) 막 눈물을 흘리려는 참이다 의 뜻이고,

as though she had gone mad....는 (과거) 마치 미쳤었듯이...

로 시제를 보셔야 합니다.

  

우리말로;

마치 ....인듯이, 마치 ..한듯이 라고 표현하고 싶을때는,

as if = as though 를 써 보세요.

 

예를들어; 

(a) She treats him as if he were her own son.

(b) He behaves as if nothing had happened.

Good morning all,

 

In Japan, rain is coming up from southen areas to

central area and it will be rainy from this evening here

in Tokyo but the weather will be relatively warm with

morning lows of 7.7 degrees and daytime highs of 13

degrees.

" Tell me your candid opinion. In what respect are they

superior to us? " " In terms of brand image and, above

all, variety of merchandise."

( 브랜드 이미지와 상품의 다양성! )

 

Words,Phrases & Patterns

> candid ;  솔직한, 정직한

> in ....respect ; ...한 면에서
> in terms of ; ...라는 관점에서

> above all ; 무엇보다도

> variety ; 다양성

> merchandize ; 상품
 

여기서 superior 는 라틴어에서 유래한 비교급으로 일반

형동사의 비교급이 er ( smart -> smarter ) 인것에 비해서

라틴어 단어의 비교급은 or 이 됩니다. 그리고, 일반

형용사의 비교급은 비교대상을...than 을 써서 나타내는데,

라틴어에서는 to 를 씁니다.

 

be superior to.. ; ( ...보다 더 우수한 ...)

be inferior to... ; ( ...보다 더 열등한 ....)

be senior to... ; ( ...보다 (지위,나이가) 위인...)

be junior to... ; ( ...보다 (지위,나이가) 아래인...)

prefer A to B ; ( B 보다 A를 더 선호하다 )

 

우리말로;

라틴어의 비교급 많이 쓰이니까, 꼭 외워두세요.

 

예를들어; 

(a) This is superior to that

(b) This is inferior to that

(c) He is 3 years senior to me

(d) I prefer this to that

(e) He is second to none in popularity

Good morning all,

 

It was sunny day during the weekend but this morning,

it is a bit cloudy and much more colder than yesterday.

It is about 5 degrees this morning and it will be about 11

degrees during the daytime here in Tokyo.

Here is today's english!

" If I am not able to attend the telephone conference call,

I'll phone you in advance so that you can arrange for

someone else to take my place."

( 참석여부를 미리 알려주는 배려! )

 

Words,Phrases & Patterns

> phone ;  (동사) ...에게 전화를 걸다.

> so that.... ; 목적을 나타내는 부사절을 만듬; ...하도록

                    = in order that
> take one's place ; ...(누구) 대신하다.
 

여기서 attend 는 (공식적) 식전, 회의에 출석하다,

(학교, 교회)등에 출석하다(다니다)의 뜻입니다.

반면에, join는 파티등에 합류하다, ..와 함께하다 의

뜻입니다. 우리말로 둘다 " 참석하다 "로 번역되기때문에,

구별이 어렵지만, 진짜뜻은 다르니까 구별해서 쓰세요.

 

attend ; (공식) 회의에 출석하다, 참석하다

join ; ( 술자리, 식사등에 ) 끼다, 합류하다.

 

우리말로;

...참가하다, 라고 표현하고 싶을때, 이 둘을 구별해서 쓰세요.

 

예를들어;

attend ;

Unfortunately, I have a conflict on this day/time.
I am trying to re-arrange my other commitment so that I can attend your

conference call. I will be able to attend if the call takes place at 8pm on

Tuesday, Dec. 9th. However, if this time does not work for others,

just keep the current time and I will try to attend.

 

join ;

(a) I will join your party later

(b) Will you join us for the year-end-party?

Good morning all,

 

In Japan, southern and northern regions except central area

are rainy at the moment and central areas including Tokyo is 

just cloudy this morning but it will be rainy from this afternoon 

according to weather forcast.

Weather is cloudy but it is warm with the daytime

max-temparature of about 18 degrees.

I went on a trip to rural Iran. The landscape was

beautiful beyond comparision. What made the scenery

second to none were the paddy fields.

> second to none ; 누구/무엇에도 뒤지지 않는

여기서 beyond comparision 의 beyond는 전치사로

..를 넘어서, 초월해서 의뜻입니다. 많이 쓰이는 표현이

 

beyond comparision ; 그 무엇과도 비교할 수 없는

beyond description/expression/words ; 말로 다 표현할 수 없는

beyond expectation ; 기대치를 넘는

beyond belief ; 믿을 수 없는

beyond endurance ; 참을 수 없는

beyond beyond one's power ; 힘이 미치지 않는

beyond one's control ; 통제할 수 없는

 

참고로; second to none;

As a dancer, He is second to none

( = Nobody is a better dancer than he is )

 

아래 예문에서 쓰임새를 이해하세요.

 

우리말로;

...말로는 다 형용할 수 없는 라고 표현하고 싶을때는 

이 표현을 써보세요.

 

예를들어;

Words,Phrases & Patterns

> make ; (5형식문장에서) ...를 ...하게하다.

> competitive ; 경쟁의, 경쟁의 심한
> for the most part ; = mostly 대부분

> substantial ; (량,정도)가 상당한,

> ...sum of ; ..한 금액의
 

여기서 spend substantial sums of money on 은

spend A on B....의 표현으로  A (시간, 돈)을 B에

쓰다의 뜻입니다.

 

참고1, spend A ...ing로도 많이 쓰는데, B의 대상이

명사일때는 on을 쓰고, ...하는데라는 동사+목적어 형태를

나타내고 싶을때는 ...ing (동명사)를 쓴다는점입니다.

 

참고2, (시간/돈)을...에 낭비하다는 뜻으로는 waste를

씁니다.

 

spend/waste A ...ing  ; ...하는데 시간/돈을 쓰다/낭비하다

spend/waste A on B  ; B(사물)에 시간/돈을 쓰다/낭비하다

 

아래 예문에서 쓰임새를 이해하세요.

 

우리말로;

...에 시간/돈을  를 쓰다/낭비하다 라고 표현하고 싶을때는 

이 표현을 써보세요.

 

예를들어;

(a) You should not spend so much money on cosmetics

(화장품에 그렇게 많은 돈을 써서는 안된다)

(아무것도 안하고 시간을 낭비했다)
